About Matt Currie
Originally from South Africa, Matt Currie started playing the guitar at the age of 12. At the age of 14, he moved to Canada with his parents. There he spent many hours each day practising under the guidance of some of Canada’s best guitar players. In 1997 he moved back to South Africa where he began teaching and performing. In 1999 he enrolled at D.I.T (Durban Institute of Technology) and began a four-year intensive music programme with studies in jazz and classical music. In 2002 he won first prize, at the Grahams Town Jazz Festival, for best young jazz guitarist in the country. This led him to join the Standard Bank National Youth Band headed by jazz legend Barney Rachabarne (toured with Paul Simon and Hugh Masakela) and toured the country playing at all the major festivals including the North Sea Jazz Festival in Cape Town. In 2003 he graduated with 24 distinctions and went on to become a lecturer at D.I.T. He continued his studies in Flamenco for a number of years under the guidance of Flamenco guitar legend Demi Fernandez. After performing and teaching music in New Zealand for a number of years, Matt and his wife are now living in Queensland, Australia.
